The public library near my house has a tiny section of books in Spanish, most of which are translations of Danielle Steele novels, the Bible, and self-help titles, but every time I go I find a little gem by Reinaldo Arenas. The first time, wandering around aimlessly waiting for a computer to open up, I came across Antes que Anochezca (Before Night Falls), a beautiful and sad autobiography I never intended to read, but which proved to be a greater influence on my opinion on Cuba and Castro than the four years I spent studying Latin American history and politics in university.
Today after the librarian told me that I was the 164th person on the wait list for Tina Fey's Bossypants, I wandered by the Spanish section again and found Arenas' Viaje a La Habana. Along with Old Rosa, this is the third Arenas book that has practically jumped into my hands. I don't even know what it's about, I just know I have to read it now.
