Sometimes when my boyfriend wants a break from the city, he returns home to the Buenos Aires province where he's from. More specifically, a small city called Olavarría.
As much as I love the capital, I like going to Olavarría because it's so different from the big city. It's quiet, life is slower, stuff is less expensive, we ride in cars and not public transit, the dogs are off leashes, and we never have to cook for ourselves.
In the city, the view from the apartment is this:
In the province, the view from the living room window at his parents' home is like this:
When we leave the apartment it's all this:
When we go for a walk in Olavarria, it's like this:

When I think about traveling back to Argentina, I get excited about being in Buenos Aires City and Buenos Aires Province. After too much time in the city, I feel a little crazy and sometimes stressed out. After several days in the province, I get a little bored, kind of lazy, and start developing a big belly from eating so much home cooked food. I feel very fortunate to be able to experience all this with my boyfriend and his family. For anyone traveling to Buenos Aires City, I would recommend getting out if possible for a day or two, but don't believe that the experience would be any less real for not doing so. It's just different.

Oh how I love your posts! My family is from La Plata and those pictures remind me so much of being there! La Plata is much bigger than Olavarría in population at least (in size, Ollavaria is about 7 x as big! wow!).
I never really spent much time in la ciudad. I visited it with my mom when I was little, toured it in '05, and then stayed in a hotel in '08 while my dad had a medical procedure done - but the extent of my trips have been in La Plata. How I miss it!
I'm going to get some alfajores tomorrow, I'll let you know if they are good!
Thanks! I liked La Plata when I took a day trip out there a couple of years ago.
Let me know how the alfajors are. I'm dying to find a good argentine place here.
OMG.
Well first let me say that I can't agree with you more on people labeling certain lifestyles "The Real _____." Annoying.
But let me get back to that OMG.
OMG armadillo!!!!!! My stomach flipped when I saw that. I didn't know you could eat those!
Kyle, neither did I until my boyfriend's dad led me into the kitchen and showed me the pot of boiling armadillo. His mom worked so hard on them, I had to try a little bite. And believe it or not, it wasn't half bad!
I actually went ahead and made some this morning - and they are delicious! Definitely worth making - easy enough!!! I used the recipe my mom has always used, although we can't figure out where she got it from! (can't recognize the writing!)
